Meeting with a gardener :Dr.K K N Kurup

Today in the Calicut University Health Centre I met an old patient named Mammad who recognized me as 'Kurup Sir' and shed tears. He retired after 25 or 30 years of service on the basis of daily wages in the University garden. I could make several others with him on permanency. This helped him to get a grativity of Rs. 80,000/- and pension of Rs. 1400/-. Now his pension is about Rs. 14,000/-. Like him, several gardeners are now going to retire without pension and grativity. At least the authority could have given them a gift of Rs. 50,000/-, as the sweat money for their service of 30-35 years. The authorities, if they wanted could have done this gift programme.
